Chapter Nineteen

Sabrina jumped back into her car, heading back toward Sugar Bliss. What on earth had happened to Matt? What kind of accident? Had he fallen? Had he gone back into the bakery?

Where are you? she texted Hattie at a stoplight.

No answer.

She drummed on her steering wheel, waiting for the light change, hoping for a response. Nothing. The light turned green, but only allowed three cars through before turning yellow.

“Son of a bitch! Who designed the timing of these lights?” she asked no one. She imagined some bored guy in front of a computer screen, cackling madly while he watched traffic pile up.

Sabrina shook the image away, turned down her music, and opened her window to listen for sirens. She couldn’t hear anything other than traffic and the wind blowing through the palm trees.

Finally, the light changed, and she turned left toward Sugar Bliss. There was an ambulance and firetruck in the intersection close to the shop. Sabrina hit her brakes. Was it for Matt? Pulling to the shoulder, she jumped from her car and ran up the sidewalk toward the accident. She called Hattie's phone, but there was no answer.

“Damnit,” Sabrina muttered, stuffing her phone back into a pocket. She craned her neck, trying to find Hattie or Matt.

The accident looked bad. A black BMW sat in the intersection, a gray Honda next to it. It looked like the BMW had run the red light, slamming into the rear door on the driver’s side. Both cars were likely totaled; debris and various liquids staining the street. Onlookers standing on the sidewalk watched the paramedics, hands over their mouths, while traffic control detoured cars around the accident. A middle-aged woman wearing heels and a pencil skirt stood next to the Honda, her phone to her ear. EMTs finished loading a gurney onto an ambulance and slammed the door before Sabrina could see who was on it.

“Hattie?” Sabrina yelled again, finally spotting the older woman sitting on the curb, her hands clasped in her lap. She dropped to her knees beside the woman. “Hattie? What happened?”

The baker looked over at Sabrina, and this time, burst into tears. Sabrina put an arm around her and let her cry, wishing she’d grabbed her purse and could offer a tissue. Luckily, one of the police officers, a tall man with Hispanic features and dark glasses shading his eyes, came over and handed a packet to Hattie.

“I know you’re probably all shaken, but can I ask you a few questions?” the man asked. “And then I'll get you on your way.”

Hattie nodded, dried her eyes, raised her chin, and took a deep breath. Her features settled and her tears dried up instantly. Sabrina envied her control in this moment. She hadn’t even seen the accident and her heart was pounding, her hands shaking.

“Did you see what happened?”

Hattie nodded again, a quick bob.

“Can you describe it?”

Hattie opened her mouth, closed it, and swallowed, her eyes again filling with tears. Her control had only been momentary.

“Take your time,” Sabrina said, worried about her employer.
